Your Body Remembers Strength

If you have been strong before, your body may be more prepared to return than your mind currently believes.

One of my favorite things to tell people—especially people who have been fit before and now believe they have lost it forever—is this:

Your body remembers.

If you have been strong before, conditioned before, or deeply connected to your physical self before, your body often wants to come back with you more quickly than you think.

People go through life.

Hormones shift.

Stress piles up.

Grief happens.

Schedules change.

You stop training. You stop eating well. You stop sleeping well. You stop feeling like yourself.

And somewhere in that process, many people begin repeating the same story:

"I will never get back there."

I do not buy that so easily.

Your body is not your enemy.

It is often far more willing than your mind currently believes.

Your muscles remember effort. Your nervous system remembers patterns. Your body remembers rhythm and the feeling of being used well.

That does not mean you force yourself back to an old standard overnight.

It does not mean comparing every workout to something you could do ten years ago.

And it certainly does not mean punishing your body for changing.

It means reestablishing a relationship with it.

It means giving your body a reason to trust you again.

When that relationship starts coming back online, progress is often faster—and more hopeful—than people expect.

Your body is not always standing in your way.

In many cases, it is waiting for you to come with it.
